Red Eye Tree Frog

Abree's school class had been studying the rain forest. Each student was assigned to do a habitat report on a rain forest animal. Abree chose THE RED EYE TREE FROG.

First, they were asked to do research at home, by filling out a questionnaire about their animal.

I appreciated how diligent Abree was about her research. Each day she would come home from school and work on a section of her questionnaire...WITHOUT reminding or prodding. Amazing!

Next, they took their research to school and wrote/typed up their report.

The final part of the project was creating a poster or diorama. Abree chose to make a diorama.
We started with a plastic dollar store frog.
He was the wrong color, so she painted him; green, orange, red and blue (belly).

Next, she painted the inside of the diorama. Blue for the sky and patches of brown and green for the ground. She also made a rain forest scene with colored pencils, for the backdrop.
The greenery from my dying Mother's Day flowers came in handy. It served as the moss and ferns on the ground, as well as the leafy canopy for the frog to hop on.

I don't think it was what she originally had in mind, but in the end I think she was satisfied with the result.
The next week, parents were invited to come listen to the habitat reports.

At the end of their report, Mrs. Palmerton had trained them to ask, "Are their any questions?" Classmates/parents would raise their hands and ask questions. The most commonly asked question was "How long does ____ live?" Every time, without fail, the presenter would say, "I don't know. I didn't research that."  I think it kind of became a game.
Why did NO ONE research how long their animal lived??? :) Ha!

Good job Abree!

Abree's Christmas Program

The second graders put on a "Christmas Around the World" program.

Abree got to play a drum for one of the songs.
Although I got there "late" (before the program started, but after most of the seats were taken) she found me and kept her eyes on me the whole time.

The kids did a really cute job and knew their parts well.
Way to go Abree! Love you!

The Kitchen is CLOSED

As we updated Taylee and Abree's room (still a work in progress) we went through all of their old toys and decided which would stay and which would go.
Abree's cute kitchen (and most of the play food and dishes) was one of the things to go. She still played with it occasionally, but Taylee's desire to have a more grown-up room won out in the end.

I put it on Craigslist without much hesitation, but when a buyer called and wanted to purchase, I started regretting my decision. I didn't think I had any sentimental attachment to this kitchen, but I guess I did. It may be that it represented my baby growing up. These kids..always growing up!

If I felt that we had more room, I probably would have justified keeping it for future grandchildren. :)
Good-bye little kitchen. Enjoy your new home.

Snapped the picture, right before we loaded it up in her car. She promised her little girl would love and play with it just as Abree had.

Trunk-or-Treat

Our bishop wanted this year's ward Trunk-or-Treat to be more of a community/neighborhood event. We got permission from the nearby elementary school to have it in their parking lot.
I was asked to make signs to put around the neighborhood and school.

I made a little pocket, on each sign, with flyers about the Trunk-or-Treat.
My kids are good sports about dressing up...I think they actually like it.

Treyson the chef.
One of my favorite parts of Treyson's costume was his chef hat. I wanted to buy him a professional one, but ran out of time, so I quickly made one out of a strip of posterboard and some inside-out wrapping paper. Voila...chef hat!
Abree the pink pig.
Taylee made Abree's pig nose and ears with felt and a milk jug lid.
Taylee the BSU vampire fan???
Rylee the "cute nerd"...of course not a nerdy-nerd.
Treyson and his good friend Dylan.
Notice the funky rubber chicken..the final touch to Treyson's costume.

TRUNK-OR-TREAT!

It's Great to be 8!

Abree turned 8 years old on October 5th. Because of General Conference, our stake baptisms were moved to October 13th. So instead of having to wait until the first Saturday of November, she was able to be baptized the week after her birthday. We thought that was pretty cool.
Powdered doughnuts and pumpkin/cream cheese bundt cake. Yum.
It's GREAT to be 8! (get it?)
I had to spell it out for many of my family members. :)
Taylee and Abree washed and braided Piper's hair (doll) and Abree put her white dress on.. so they could be "twins".
Abree's dress was made by Grandma Smullin. Isn't is pretty? Thank you Grandma Smullin!
Months before Abree's birthday..at least 6, Abree told me she wanted "high heels" for a gift. I found these "high heels" brand new at Goodwill. They were a little big, but fit ok with socks. She'll be able to wear them for a while. :)
Taylee braided Abree's hair and we put her flower headband on that she got for her birthday.
Abree is ready to get baptized.

This year, Abree's Primary teacher Sister Morrison, asked me (as Primary president) if their class could attend each baptism. I thought that sounded like a great idea (if parents supported it).
Each month, as Abree would go to her classmate's baptisms, she would get more and more excited for her own. She and Catherine Chandler were the LAST ones to be baptized (in our ward) for the year...finally. Abree also had a school classmate (Tyler) and a friend from another ward (Allie Brown) get baptized the same day..kinda cool.

After the baptism, we gathered in a classroom for her confirmation, so family and friends could participate.
Family pictures followed.
Sweet cousins... a.k.a. the "princess posse" (in part).

We gathered back at our home to have homemade soup and bread. I made a potato soup and chicken vegetable noodle soup. Karen made whole wheat and french bread.
Thanks Karen! Yumm-o.

Middle School

Can you believe it???
Treyson is going into 6th grade this year... middle school!
After gettting registered (and paying BIG bucks),Treyson and Taylee wanted to find their lockers and get set up.
Treyson was excited to find he got a top locker!
Taylee is going into 8th grade.. the top of the school.. the expert of middle school.
For the remaining of the year, this locker will NEVER look this clean and organized again, Taylee joked.
I'm thinking this is a true statement. :)
They're ready... let school begin.
The most WONDERFUL time of the year!
