Last Tuesday, was Abree's last day of pre-school.... an exciting and sad time for me. I'm excited for her to go to Kindergarten, but I'm sad that my baby is growing up. In the Fall, I will have several hours to myself EVERY week day. Oh my, what shall I do??? I think I'll figure it out. :)

Kindergarten Practice at Pre-school
KINDERGARTEN PRACTICE!
The school had sent home a packet, which included a list of things children should be able to do BEFORE entering Kindergarten and what to expect from the Kindergarten year. I thought it would be fun to pretend we were in Kindergarten and work on some of those things.
In Kindergarten, they have "centers" or different areas in the room where learning and play happen. The school packet mentioned these 4 centers; Puzzle, Art, Blocks and Dramatic Play. So of course this meant our Kindergarten Practice needed these too.

In circle time, we read these books that talk about going to school. We also practiced and practiced and practiced sitting "criss-cross-applesauce", so everyone could see and not be bothered by their neighbor. We also practiced raising our hands to speak, listening to the teacher and had a line leader as we moved from center to center.
After they finished their "assignment" (writing their name/writing the alphabet), they turned in their papers to be "graded". They were thrilled to see a sticker and "Great Job!" on their papers as they got their assignments back.
The first day, we made puppets in the Art Center. The next day, the girls could make what ever they wanted using the supplies on hand. Fun, fun.
I was surprised how much the girls liked the Puzzle Center.
At our Dramatic Play Center, we had a variety of flannel board pictures and magnets. I'm guessing the Dramatic Play Center at school might be dress-up or a miniature kitchen, but this worked for us.
It was fun to see the difference in behavior these 2 days.... more mature. If they ever got too loud or forgot how to play nicely I'd ask, "What do you think a Kindergartner would do?" or "If you were a Kindergartner, how would you act?"
Abree and I have continued practicing our address and phone number. I think she's got our address mostly learned.
I HATE the mess dress-up makes! :)
At the end of the first day, the girls were given HOMEWORK. They were SOOO excited! Their homework was to practice their address, phone number and tying their own shoes.
All of these were listed as things children should know when entering Kindergarten.
I "tested" them the next day. They each had learned some, but had room for improvement. They received a fruit snack for good work.
Abree- "Mom, I just keep thinking 3695, 3695, 3695."
Me- "Our address is 3695 Legacy Common."
Abree-"Oh ya, that's what I thought."

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
We celebrated St. Patrick's Day at pre-school.
As the girls arrived, they painted these pots. It was messy, but a whole lot of fun too. I think the result was well worth some paint on the bathroom sink. What do you think?
Oh no, I'm starting to rhyme like Dr. Seuss.
A pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!
As a young girl, I truly believed that there was gold at the end of the rainbow. Our family would sometimes take Sunday drives to try and find that ever elusive end. We never did find it.... that darn rainbow kept moving away from us.
Next, we talked about what it meant to be lucky. I gave each girl a lucky penny. They made a wish on their lucky penny and hoped it would come true.
One of our focus areas this month, has been on exercise. It was a nice enough day that we all went outside to play an exercise game. Each girl took turns drawing a card and then we all did what it said. This proved to be a great way to get some of their energy out. Maybe this needs to become a regular part of pre-school. :)

As we were eating, Andi swore she caught a glimpse of a naughty Leprechaun. The girls got excited and had all sorts of questions. I had never seen a REAL leprechaun, so I couldn't answer their questions. I turned them over to Andi.... the expert.
I had big plans for these bags-o-green-fun. I wanted to plan a treasure hunt, with X marking the spot. (We were talking about X this week.) But... too many ideas, with too little time. I ended up just sending them home with the girls as a St. Patrick's Day surprise.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Reading with Dr. Seuss
March 2nd is Dr. Seuss's birthday, so as a pre-school, we decided to celebrate it..... a little later.
Next, we played a rhyming game. They did pretty well, but sometimes they would get mixed up with the first letter sound for a rhyming sound.
"Snake and sock do not rhyme, but they do have the same beginning sound."

School Classmate Valentines
Taylee prefers to make Valentines for her school classmates from scratch. (She's not demanding, just very excited about it each year, so I indulge her and we come up with something original... or more likely, something I've seen in a magazine or blog. )
"Valentine You & I Are A Perfect Match"

And for the teachers, we made bigger ones, with the candy cane hearts I melted a few weeks back.
Valentine's Day Swap
"I'm FORTUNATE to have you Valentine" -Chocolate-dipped and sprinkled fortune cookies
"We make a great PAIR Valentine" -Cute knee-high Valentine socks
"Valentine STICK with me" -Homemade pin cushion with Shrinky Dink pins
"Valentine you're SWEET" -Box of chocolates
"Valentine we're a perfect MATCH" -Homemade match book with candy cane heart
"Valentine you're the BOMB" -Bath bomb
"I hope U-NO how much I like you Valentine" -Mini Uno game cards
I also sent a "Love Pillow". A "Love Pillow" is a simple tradition of family service. When you find the pillow on your bed, a service has been done for you. Next, it's your turn to do a service for a family member. (You have 24 hours or less to do it in.) As the pillow makes it's way from one bed to the next, hopefully love abounds and service is done with a smile. :)
Hope you had a HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!!

L is for Ladybugs & Lollipops
When it was my turn for pre-school this month, I had the letter L.
The first day we talked about ladybugs. We colored a picture, made a counting book (with fingerprint ladybugs) and played a "site word" ladybug BINGO type game. (Some of the girls are starting to be able to recognize the site words! Some still don't really care.) :)
The next day we talked about lollipops. I had this idea about making lollipop sugar cookies. Plan A : roll the dough into "snakes". Then wind them around in a swirl creating a lollipop.
The dough was WAY too crumbly to do this. Soooo....
Plan B: Form different sizes of balls squish them into circle shapes onto the sticks.
I had the girls glue the circles together, sandwich the craft sticks between 2 yellow circles, put a clear plastic bag over, tie a bow and stick a magnet on the back.
---I was happy to use the little craft sticks and little plastic bags I bought on clearance... I didn't have a use for them at the time. I have LOTS more. Anyone NEED a lollipop magnet???

C is for Cat
C is for Cat!
The girls made cat masks.
We attempted to make candy corn bracelets.
I had seen some where that you could make bracelets using jellybeans. I thought that a candy corn bracelet would be fun. Wrong! When they would push the needle through the candy corn, it would break 7 out of 10 times. Finally, when one of the girls poked her finger hard enough to make her cry, we stopped and moved on to the next activity.
We read, "If You Give a Cat a Cupcake" and then frosted cupcakes and decorated with sprinkles.
Each girl also got to take home a cat puppet
